Mountains Walking - Opaque Thoughts: Peach, Tangerine, Pineapple - Imperial Milkshake IPA

We wish we could take credit for “discovering” Bozeman, Montana’s Mountains Walking. 

But, after earning the #2 spot on Hop Culture’s 5 Favorite Milkshake IPAs in the country and taking home a Gold medal at the North American Beer awards less than two years after opening  — all credit is due to the brewers. 

Make beer this good — in any far flung corner of the world — and beer geeks will find out about it! 

That #2 Milkshake IPA is Opaque Thoughts. And, this is the latest variant in the series. The brewers amped it up with peach, tangerine, and pineapple! 

This Cold Stone Creamery rival isn’t just a fruitastic milkshake thickened by all the toasted rice, oats, and lactose Mountains Walking used. The brewery heightened its flavor by dry-hopping with over 7 lbs per barrel of Citra and Amarillo Hops.

Drekker Brewing Company - Flash Kick - Imperial New England IPA

The unsung hero in this Imperial hopbomb is its brightly tropical kveik yeast! 

This Norwegian strain was relatively unknown in American craft until just a few years ago, and we still don’t see it often enough (for IPAs, most brewers use a standard English Ale yeast). 

Drekker Brewing and Back Channel fermented this collab with kveik for a faster, cleaner process that allows the hops’ flavors to shine like a Skittles rainbow blasting out of the can straight onto your tongue! 

Speaking of the hops — this 8.2% ABV Imperial New England IPA boasts a lush four-way combo of Citra, Mosaic, Strata and Motueka. Deepened with tropical mango and pineapple notes from the kveik, the flavors of these hops flow juicily forward in waves of OJ, grapefruit, and passionfruit kush. 

Resident Culture Brewing Company - Lightning Drops - New England IPA

When it comes to the Hazy IPAs in Charlotte, North Carolina, brews from Resident Culture are like the T-Birds from Grease. And, their flagship Lightning Drops IPA has gotta be the Danny Zuko of the gang.

Here’s the scoop on this slick Daddy-O:

The brewmeisters at RC craft this cool cat with a supreme 4 lbs per barrel of hand-selected Mosaic, Citra, and Galaxy Hops. It’s a raucous rumble of tangy OJ flavor and tropical guava nectar, with a swingin’ swill of piney dankness on the finish.

This juicebomb drinks smoother than grease lightning and kicks with a goody-goody 6.5% ABV. Tango with this T-Bird, and you can keep the final summer nights rockin’ and rollin,’ no sweat.

Moonraker Brewing Company - Space Nectar - New England IPA

The Moonraker brewers took a celestial approach to this heavenly hopjuice, stuffing it with heaps of dank Amarillo and powerful Citra Cryo Hops. But, that’s not what makes Space Nectar so otherworldly — they also used a “classified” experimental hop variety that they won’t reveal to anyone, not even us.

That’s not gonna stop us from trying to crack it! 

After tasting all the swirling flavors of ruby-red grapefruit, sweet tangerines, and zesty limejuice, it’s pretty clear that Citra Cryo is a big player in this brew. Amarillo comes in more subtly, leaving traces of kush and evergreen in each creamsicle-smooth sip.

And, amid all the nuances of citrus fruit juice and piney resin, a presence of spiced mangoes and lemon meringue takes the flavor experience sky-high. Could that be the classified hop?

Hubbard's Cave - Fresh IIPA V47 - Imperial IPA

We do everything we can to get our hop-grubbin’ paws on new batches of Hubbard’s Cave Fresh IIPAs.

These juicy hops are a staple for Chicago craft fans. In fact, The Chicago Tribune even calls out the Fresh IIPA series for vaunting some of the best Hazy IPAs in Chicago. 

But, that’s not even the best part — every version boasts a fresh new hop combo. And, with one taste of Fresh IIPA V47, deeply profound layers of flavor reveal themselves from Citra, Nelson Sauvin, and Simcoe Hops.

Citra brings the tropical mango and papaya flavors to the mix, leaving room for Nelson Sauvin’s notes of ripe apricot and just-plucked white grapes. Bringing up the rear is Simcoe, delivering potent smacks of spring pine dankness. It tastes like a straight-up tropical mango cocktail
